CENTRAL MICHIGAN ENDS BORO’S WIN STREAK AT 19
Koscheck Concludes Brilliant Week With Win Over Fourth-Ranked Wrestler

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University wrestling team tasted defeat for the first time in over thirteen months on Sunday, as Central Michigan edged the Fighting Scots, 18-15. Edinboro, ranked seventh by Intermat and eighth by the NWCA, falls to 11-1 with its first loss since January 9, a 22-9 decision to North Carolina in last year’s Virginia Duals. Edinboro had won 19 matches in a row.

The match was billed as a Clash of Conference Champions, with Edinboro having won the last two Eastern League Wrestling titles and the Chippewas the Mid-American Conference champions the last two years. Central Michigan improves to 8-4-1 and is ranked 19th by both InterMat and the NWCA.

Chris Marshall’s (17-5) pin at 141 lbs. provided the impetus for the upset. In one of three matches featuring a pair of nationally-ranked grapplers, Marshall, a returning All-American and ranked sixth, flattened 19th-ranked Cory Ace (23-13) one minute into the match. That knotted the score at 15-15 with only the 149 lb. match remaining. In a tightly contested match, Jeremy Hardman scored a 5-4 decision over Boro freshman Kevin Maier with 26 seconds left in the third period. Maier escaped in the final seconds, but feel one point short. Hardman improved to 19-10 while Maier fell to 8-14.

Edinboro captured just one of the three duels with nationally-ranked foes. Josh Koscheck, up to number two in Division I at 174 lbs. following his win over Penn’s Rick Springman at the NWCA Classic on Monday, captured a 4-1 decision over Ryan Cunningham, who was ranked fourth. Koscheck is now 29-2, with Cunningham going to 17-5. In the third matchup, Central Michigan’s Chris Veke was a 5-2 winner over A.J. Johnson at 197 lbs. Veke entered the match ranked 20th, while Johnson was 19th.

The match began at 157 lbs., with Edinboro’s Ben Boozer narrowly escaping an upset by Russell Clark, who is now 5-14. Boozer, ranked 18th, improved to 19-8 with a 12-10 decision.

Chippewa Vernon Cannon used a first period takedown and a third period escape for a 3-1 win over Yanni Diamond at 165 lbs. Following Koscheck’s win, Edinboro’s Kevin Welsh, ranked ninth at 184 lbs., needed overtime to best Phil Baroni in a physical match. Welsh improved to 29-5 with a 6-4 win thanks to a takedown at the 37-second mark. Heavyweight Josh Pearce boosted Edinboro’s lead to 12-6 with 2-0 win over Jack Leffler, as the 16th-ranked grappler improved to 22-8. But the Scots would win just one of the final four matches, that coming at 133 lbs. where Chad Caros was an 8-3 winner over Jordan Webster. Caros is now 20-7.

Freshman Casey Brewster, wrestling in his first home dual, suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to Ahmad Sanders at 125 lbs. on riding time. Sanders accumulated 1:42 for the winning point.

Edinboro looks to get back on the winning track with a pair of key EWL matches this week. The Scots will travel to Pittsburgh on Thursday, February 17, then host West Virginia the next night. Both matches begin at 7:30 p.m.
