CHARLES WINS HEAVYWEIGHT BATTLE; BIG RED CRUISES PAST BROWN 35-3
ITHACA, N.Y. - Senior Seth Charles (Schuyler Falls, N.Y.) won the battle
of the heavyweights Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Newman Arena, helping Cornell beat Brown 35-3.
Charles, ranked 10th at the heavyweight division by the Amateur Wrestling News, posted a 2-1 win in the tiebreaker over seventh-ranked Bronson
Lingamfelter. Charles' victory increased Cornell's lead to 25-3.
The Big Red (10-4 overall, 4-1 Ivy League) jumped out to a 19-0 lead and never looked back. Senior Ben New (Canastota, N.Y.) won by major decision
at 141 pounds, beating David Dies 11-2 to start the match. Junior Alex Berman (Tel-mond, Israel) followed that up with a 7-3 win at 149 over Jason
Mercado.
After senior 157-pounder Leo Urbinelli (Ontario, N.Y.) won by forfeit, junior Jim Stanec (St. Louis, Mo.) scored a 3-1 victory at 165, taking down
Brad McDonald just before the final horn went off. Senior Joe Tucceri (Euclid, Ohio) edged Nick Almeida 2-1 at 174 pounds to put the home team up
19-0.
The Bears (7-9, 2-2) got their only points at 184 pounds, where Karl Rittger posted a 7-3 decision over junior Chris Gafner (Rome, N.Y.).
Senior 197-pounder Bob Greenleaf (Kirkwood, Pa.) won a 2-0 decision over Craig Powell to put Cornell up 22-3 heading into the heavyweight bout.
Senior 125-pounder Aaron Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) pinned Ryan Gill in 1:41, before junior Sean Doyle (Wheeling, W.Va.) closed out the match at 133 with
a 12-0 major decision over James Castaneda.
Cornell will have its final dual match of the season Thursday, Feb. 17, when it entertains Buffalo at 7 p.m. at the Newman Arena. The Big Red will
then wrestle in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships March 3-4 at Navy.
