EAST BRUNSWICK and BOUND BROOK, N.J.- Franklin & Marshall senior Joe Gillespie (Lansdale; North Penn H.S.) pinned two of his opponents and accept a forfeit at 197 as the Diplomats (4-11, 2-8 EIWA) fell to Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent Rutgers 39-3 before recording a 33-24 victory over EIWA foe Syracuse and a 33-24 win over Coppin State 23-12 at Rutgers University in East Brunswick, N.J. The team then traveled to Bound Brook H.S. in Bound Brook, N.J. to take on Wagner, defeating the Seahawks 57-0.

The match with Wagner does not count at a team victory because the Seahawks do not have enough wrestlers. NCAA rules state that a team must have seven wrestlers. The F&M-Wagner match featured only seven bouts. The individual matches, however, will count on each wrestler's record.

Gillespie pinned John Soden of Syacuse in 5:57 and Tim Turner of Coppin State in 3:35 and later accepted a Wagner forfeit. Freshman Derek Michalowski (Bound Brook, N.J.; Bound Brook H.S.) pinned Coppin State's Vincent Harris at 6:28 in the 165-pound class and registered a technical fall over Kalen Pascal of Syracuse. He later bested John Leonard of Wagner 8-6 at Bound Brook H.S., Michalowski's alma mater.

Freshman Craig Frost (Roselle Park, N.J.; Roselle Park H.S.) recorded Franklin & Marshall's only win over Rutgers, 5-2 decision over Bryon Lauer at 157. Frost also pinned Craig Nowakowski of Syracuse at 4:25 amd Anthony Kuefner of Wagner in just 34 seconds to post three wins on the day and raise his team-leading total to 17.

In the 149 weight class, Diplomat senior Brian Kapp (Baltimore, Md.; Calvert Hall H.S.) recorded a 16-4 major decision over Brett Cowen of Syracuse and 17-9 decision to beat Cairo Moorman of Coppin State before pinning Chris Calimano of Wagner at 1:17. Kapp leads the team this season with eight falls. He is the active career leader with 11.

It was the second time F&M defeated Syracuse this season. The Diplomats bested the Orangemen 29-19 at Franklin & Marshall on December 3, 1999.
