FAIRFAX, VA, Feb. 24, 2000 ... George Mason built an early lead and held off a late Old Dominion rally to defeat the Monarchs, 22-19, in a Colonial Athletic Association college wrestling dual meet Thursday night at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium. It was the final dual meet of the season for both teams.

The victory lifted the Patriots to a 6-4 overall record, 3-1 in the CAA, while Old Dominion fell to 5-6 overall, 2-2 in the CAA. The victory ensured George Mason's 15th consecutive winning season, raised its record to 83-8-1 in the Linn Gym over the past 14 seasons, and gave it a 40-6 record all-time in CAA dual meets.

George Mason won four of the first six matches to take a 22-6 lead. Opening at 197 pounds, Old Dominion junior Brad Krepps scored a 12-7 decision, but Patriot freshman Nate Broughton won by fall in 2:45 at heavyweight before Monarch senior Chip Reyes won a 10-5 decision at 125 to tie the score at 6-6. George Mason then won three consecutive matches as freshman Rob Becker scored an 11-2 major decision at 133, freshman Donnie DeFilippis recorded his ninth fall of the season (fifth in his
last seven matches ) in 6:12 at 141 and freshman Adrian Austin won by fall in 1:56 at 149.

Then Old Dominion began to rally. At 157, freshman Jake Cairns scored a 4-2 decision in sudden death, then sophomore Jeff Rusak (ranked 14th in the nation by InterMat) won a 10-7 decision at 165. Sophomore George Sable brought the Monarchs within 22-16 with a 16-7 major decision at 174, but needing a fall to tie the team score, senior Chris Harrington managed just a 4-0 decision at 184 to allow the Patriots to escape with the victory.

George Mason hosts the CAA Championships at the Linn Gym on Saturday, March 4, beginning at 11 a.m. Each of the 10 weight class champions and three "wild card" selections will earn berths in the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for March 16-18 at the Kiel Center in St. Louis.
