FAIRFAX, VA, Feb. 15, 2000 ... James Madison won early and late to defeat George Mason, 26-17, in a Colonial Athletic Association wrestling dual meet Tuesday night at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium. James Madison won its second straight meet to improve to 5-3 overall, 3-0 in the CAA, while George Mason dropped to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the CAA. The loss snapped a nine-meet win streak at home for George Mason, leaving its record at 82-8-1 in the Linn Gym over the past 14 seasons. It also broke an eight-meet win streak in the conference for the Patriots as their nine-year record in CAA dual meets moved to 39-6. Opening at 197 pounds, James Madison took the first three matches for a 15-0 lead. Senior Elliot Williams got things off to a good start for the Dukes as he won by fall in 2:55, junior heavyweight D.J. Hockman received a forfeit and sophomore Jonathan Huesdash won a 7-0 decision at 125.
Then the Patriots began to rally. At 133, freshman Rob Becker scored a 15-2 major decision and freshman Donnie DeFilippis won by fall in 3:41 at 141 over two-time defending CAA champion Dave Vollmer. It was DeFilippis' second straight victory over Vollmer since an early-season defeat. Freshman Adrian Austin followed with a 10-2 major decision at 149 and senior Jason Grant escaped three seconds into the tie-breaker period to win a 3-2 decision at 157 to give George Mason a 17-15 advantage.
Sophomore Seth Cameron broke through for the Dukes with a 24-8 technical fall in 6:32 at 165, then junior Nathan Rickman won a 14-10 decision at 174 to give James Madison a six-point advantage heading into the final match. Junior Sam Maltese clinched the victory with a 9-5 decision at 184.
George Mason travels to Princeton Saturday for a tri-meet with the host Tigers and 14th-ranked Pennsylvania. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. James Madison has a busy Saturday ahead as it travels to Appalachian State for a 10 a.m. meet before visiting North Carolina in Chapel Hill at 7 p.m.
