In a meet that had enough thrills, upsets, and controversial calls for nearly  everyone, Lehigh claimed the EIWA dual meet title by edging archrival Penn  19-15. before 1,465 fans, split evenly between the two schools.
The meet started at 184, and the first controversial call came at the next  weight as Penn's Mike Fickell was awarded a takedown, immediately followed by  a reversal by Glauco Lolli-Ghetti. Many fans on the Lehigh side of the arena
argued that Fickell never had control, although some conceded that the  official probably had to make the call from the position he was in at the  time of the action. Fickell went on to win 5-4.
Controversy struck again, along with a big upset, as Lehigh's Shawn Laughlin  upset Bandele Adeniyi-Bada, ranked fifth in the nation, 4-2. The controversy  eruped with two seconds remaining in the bout as Adeniyi-Bad was driving for  a takedown at the edge of the mat, when the official blew the whistle,  stopping the action. He explained later that he thought the towel boy had
tapped him on the shoulder, signifying time had expired.
After a forfeit at 125 by Penn, Lehigh's Tristan Boyd electified the crowd by  hitting defending Eastern champion Jason Nagle with a five-point move in the  first period. Nagle mounted a comeback, and went ahead 8-7 with a takedown  late in the third period. Boyd appeared to escape in the process of going out  of bounds, but didn't get the call, to the frustration of the partisan Lehigh  fans.
It was upset time again at 141, as Penn's Jody Giuricich used riding time and  two escapes to offset Matt Goldstein's third period takedown to win 3-2. Dave Esposito, out for the past couple of weeks with a sprained ankle, made a  successful return to the Lehigh lineup, getting the only major decision of  the day, 10-2.
Final team score was Lehigh 19 Penn 15.
