BLOOMSBURG-Bloomsburg got off to a quick start, but Lock Haven fought back and
managed a 21-18 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) win at Nelson Field House Sunday
night. Bloomsburg has not beaten Lock Haven since the 1989-90 season.
The match started at the 157 weight
class where #5 in the nation Ed Hockenberry won his 29th straight match with a
pinfall of Lock Haven's Charlie Brenneman in 2:42. Hockenberry is 32-1 with 15
pins on the season.
Hunter Guenot and Cassidy Shults
helped Bloomsburg extend its lead to 12-0 with decisions over David Surovec and
Josh Millard, respectively. Guenot had to hold on in the final seconds to get a
3-2 win. Shults won 13-7.
Lock Haven reeled off six straight
wins to come back and clinch the match, though. Dave Murray(#16 in the nation)
got things started for the Bald Eagles at 184 with a 8-0 major decision over
Chris Froelich.
Avery Zerkle and Kenny Haines then
picked up decisions for Lock Haven. Zerkle won 6-2 over Todd Hockenbroch at 197.
Haines topped Pat Spirelli, 7-2, at heavyweight.
At 125, 17th-ranked Trap McCormack
got a 14-6 major decision over Bloomsburg's Brock Hite. Scott Bair, 15th-ranked
at 133, followed suit for the Bald Eagles, getting a 12-1 major over Justin
Haupt.
With Lock Haven leading 18-12,
Bloomsburg still had a chance with two matches left. But Lock Haven's James
Lavalle got a 5-2 win over Brett Tullo at 141 to clinch the win. Tullo led 2-0
early with a takedown, but Lavalle got back to neutral, scored a takedown of his
own, and then fought Tullo off during the second and third periods to score the
victory.
The Bald Eagles decided to forfeit
the 149 lb. match making the final score, 21-18.
Lock Haven moved to 11-7 overall, 4-3
in the EWL, while Bloomsburg fell to 7-3-1, 3-3-1 in the EWL. The Huskies will
host Rider on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
