DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 13) - The Navy wrestling team improved to 9-3 on the year with a 21-14 victory over Duke on Sunday afternoon in Durham. The win capped off a 2-1 weekend for the Mids as Navy defeated North Carolina State and lost to North Carolina on Saturday.
The Duke match came down to the final match of the day as Matt Berger
decisioned Alex Hunt, 3-1, at heavyweight. The Blue Devils started off the match with a 4-0 lead, thanks to Tommy Hoang's 15-5 major decision
over Randy Evans at 125. Navy's Phil MacNaughton defeated Sean Meakim, 5-4, at 133 pounds to pull the Mids to within one at 4-3.
At 141 pounds, Harry Clarke of Duke defeated Mike Simon of Navy, 9-4. The Mids then jumped into the lead with Bryan Murphy at 149 and Brett
Harman at 157 winning major decisions. Murphy defeated Andre Soliman, 16-5, while Harman defeated Geoff Anderson, 14-4.
Duke tied the team score at 11 with a 14-5 major decision by Mike Mitchellover Dom Ewers at 165 pounds. At 174, Navy's James Griffin
decisioned Matt Hoover, 2-1, on riding time. Carl Zindars gave the Midshipmen an 18-11 advantage when he notched a major decision victory
over Tyler Smith, 14-2, at 184 pounds. Duke's Daegan Smith narrowed the
gap to four points, defeating Jim Letchford, 5-2, at 197 pounds. Going into the final bout, Duke needed a technical fall or a pin for the team
victory, but Berger held on for the 3-1 victory to give Navy the win.
Navy returns to action on Saturday night as the Mids wrestle Army at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
